How can I register my company in the UK?

There are two primary ways to register a company in the UK:

  • Register with Companies House yourself
  • Use a formations agent to register your company for you

Both methods have the same outcome. However, many businesses choose to use a company formations agent as it speeds up the process and ensures a successful registration.

Can I register a company in the UK as a foreigner?

Absolutely! If you’re not a UK national or resident, you can register a company in the UK. Many UK-based businesses are run by non-UK residents.

There are no nationality or residency restrictions for directors or shareholders. However, the company must have a physical address in the UK. If you’re interested in setting up a UK business as a non-resident, we have a specialist non-UK company formation package.

Do I need a UK address to register a company?

Yes. To open a UK limited company, you will need a UK address to register the company too. But don’t panic — this doesn’t mean you need to rush out and rent commercial property.

Your registered office address is simply a correspondence address for Companies House. Because of this, you can use your home address or a virtual office address to register your business.

It’s important to note that your registered company address will be available publicly on the Company House registry of businesses.

Can I open a company in the UK for free?

Unfortunately, there’s no free way of opening a company in the UK for free. While you can become a sole trader for free, if you want to open a limited company, there are applicable fees.

These fees are payable to Companies House. The cost can vary depending on whether you register online or by post. When you register via Mint Formations, your registration fees are included in our package price.

Is it easy to register a company in the UK?

The company formation process in the UK is generally straightforward, especially if you do it online. During the process, you’ll need to choose a company name, provide your company details (i.e. director, people of significant control, etc.), prepare certain documents, and pay a fee to Companies House.

Does a company have to register with HMRC?

When you register a company, you’ll quickly become familiar with Companies House and HMRC. Companies House is the register of UK business, while HMRC deals with taxes. When you register a company, you must register your business with HMRC to pay corporation tax.
